Democratic-Republicans- Thomas Jefferson

Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) was the primary actor in organizing the Democratic-Republican party. in 1793 Jefferson left his position as a cabinet member under George Washington’s Administration in order to start organizing the Republican movement in opposition to the strong central government Hamilton was promoting. In addition to creating many Congressional organizations that coincided with state and local organizations, Jefferson ran for president in 1796 losing by a narrow margin. However, in 1800 Jefferson is elected to office as the Federalist party began diminishing quickly and therefore, the first party system had developed and soon evolved into more distinct and partisan parties.
